Guest Post by Ivie from Homeschool on the Range

Yvie practices the art of simple living with her chickens, goats, dogs, rabbits, and house full of boys in rural America.  She loves acoustic guitar, historical novels, and anything with dark chocolate!  You can find her at Homeschool On the Range, or on Facebook and Instagram.

It’s human nature to remember the bad more vividly than the good – it’s how we evolved to make sure we stayed safe – by remembering those negative experiences vividly so that we could avoid them in the future.

However, with the advent of massive connectivity, negativity now surrounds us from every direction….and it’s pervasive.  Turn on the television, tune into social media, or pick up a paper and you’ll typically be bombarded with negativity.

My Declutter Schedule

My Declutter Schedule
My Declutter Schedule

I wrote this post about Decluttering your brain way back when and also this one about Dealing with Toy Overload, but honestly I am still figuring out how to declutter my life! Being the little crafter that I am, I keep almost everything because I constantly think I should be able to do something with it.

Well I have a whole new schedule planned so I am getting to the end of this madness…

I have to admit, that first morning after I wrote this post I woke up thinking’ “What have I done? Why did I do that?” I had a feeling of impending doom… like failure was sure to follow, but now, 6 days later I am still hanging on so I guess I’m really doing this!

So there was a few things that really dragged me down and I knew those things would have to be addressed first.

What did I change…

Sticker Chart: Barbie Spy Squad

Oh yes we are still doing the sticker chart thing and we even pay money these days at the end of it… well it all gets saved so I guess we are at a good spot there. I am not proud of the fact that we use sticker charts to get the kids to do things but its just so much less effort… I know I know its terrible. So if you want to be terrible with me, heres a chart for the Spy Sqad!

Even just thinking of words to start this post is hard. The truth is what I am about to start is exposing me in so many ways…

I may fail at this but I refuse to not do it because I am afraid of failure. I have failed so many times in my life I can’t even count, but it doesn’t mean it will stop me from trying again… I am one tough cookie, I can give myself that one!

So the truth is even though it always looks like things are going so well and I am always looking good on photos (because I am taking photos for the blog from the neck up only), is that I am actually really getting

iPad Sketch Tutorial

This one is a great project for the homeschoolers and also great fun for all kids and young-at-heart adults who love drawing cartoons or anything for that matter!  Sketching is one of the things I love to do in my free time and now with one of the wonderful Apps Apple brought us, called “Paper by 53”,  it has become so much easier and quicker to create a work of art on the fly. All your palettes, pencils and erasers are right there in one place so it doesn’t take so much time to set up and pack away a whole art set.

9 Tips for Flying with Children

9 Tips for Flying with Children
9 Tips for Flying with Children

It’s not often that we fly these days, I mean Cheap flights are getting hard to come by, so I was a little rusty on what to do with my kids when we recently went on a flight to Johannesburg. Thinking about what to bring or how to prepare for a flight can be stressful, so I compiled this list with my tips for flying with children. Read the rest of this entry

Kids Say the Darndest Things in English and Afrikaans!

We all have things we will never forget that our kids had said at some stage… I personally write everything down in my notes and even copy them to a little special book that I will show them when they are older. It’s something you just don’t want to miss as a parent, but as adults we all can appreciate the funny things these little creatures come up with.

I have asked Moms from groups combining around 200 000 members all across South Africa, what were the funniest things their kids said and they did not disappoint! Here are some of my favourites! Read the rest of this entry

Flash Cards and Poster Free!!

Flash Cards and Poster Free!!
Flash Cards and Poster Free!!

This one is A3 size but you can set your printer for A4 if you wish to print smaller size. I highly recommend that you take the high res file (10MB) to a printer and print out 2 copies of the A3 and laminate both. The one is for the wall as a poster and the other can be cut in the middle of the green lines to make flashcards.

The smaller file (250kb) can be printed A4 without quality loss but might be too small for a poster and way too small for flashcards. The low res A3 might be a little less on quality but still ok if it doesn’t bother you.  Read the rest of this entry
